Rome-Beijing: Changing the Game. Italy's Embrace of China's Connectivity Project, Implications for the EU and the US

Rome-Beijing: Changing the Game. Italy's Embrace of China's Connectivity Project, Implications for the EU and the US Publication Table of contents Italy wants to be the first G7 nation to sign a Memorandum of Understanding on the Belt and Road Initiative, China’s massive infrastructure and connectivity project. Through the Memorandum, Italy seeks more market access in China for Italian companies and “Made in Italy” products, as well as more Chinese investments in Italy under the Initiative framework. Besides commercial considerations, there are important geo-strategic implications to consider. Italy’s endorsement of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s signature foreign policy initiative undermines European Union efforts at finding a common stance vis-à-vis Beijing. It also weakens the position of the United States in its tug-of-war with China over trade and global leadership. Remarkably, it is Italian populists in power in Rome – though there are differences between the two coali

The signing in Rome is not just symbolic, as it goes with 29 deals worth 2.5 billion euros, with Italy claiming follow-up contracts might be worth  20 billion euros . Details of the deals are unclear, but that is not unusual. Deals announced by head of states are often mere frameworks, with specifics to be finalized later. This is especially true with the kind of megadeals that China is wont to announce. What are the 10 main deals that China and Italy have agreed to? 1. China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) can use its Trieste base to expand transportation links to central and eastern Europe, China, and other countries in the Far East. CCCC will also take part in the development of the port of Genoa, on the Gulf of Genoa. 2.

Sangar News Baloch national leader Dr Allah Nizar Baloch has said in a statement that Pakistani atrocities have increased with more intensity in Balochistan. He said women and children are being abducted and kept in unknown torture cells in the guise of arrest, working on the policy of collective punishment, which clearly indicates that Baloch national struggle has become matured. Is Europe Ready to Become a Part of the Belt and Road Initiative?

01.04.2019 Xiang Lanxin © Reuters The EU’s strategic autonomy may require a strategic reset with Russia, a move Washington’s anti-Russian hawks loathe the most. It seems that both France and Germany are increasingly inclined to the idea of turning the page regarding the Ukraine crisis, even if criticism over Crimea’s seizure continues. The old Europe would not be willing to go to war with Russia, driven either by the big brother across the Atlantic or little Slavic brothers within.  I have little doubt that Italy will not be the last member of the G7 and EU to take part in China’s ambitious Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The only doubt is whether Italy can eventually deliver on what has been agreed upon in the Memo of Understanding between China and Italy, whether it concerns port facilities or trade and investment.  At first glance, Italy has, remarkably, managed to rally an elite consensus in a very divided country on how to deal with China. The consensus includes politicians

CPEC, Gwadar and the road ahead

By  hasaan khawar  Apr.02,2019 CPEC is the flagship project of BRI and Gwadar is the cornerstone of CPEC. Last time when I flew to Gwadar from Islamabad, it took me 14 hours, including an overnight stopover at Karachi. The turbulent landing of the turboprop ATR at the unassuming Gwadar Airport seemed to mock the tall ambitions for the city. This, however, is set to change with Chinese help. The new $230 million Gwadar International Airport is expected to be operational in three years, allowing much larger aircraft to operate on domestic and international routes and bringing the much-needed connectivity to this once-modest fishing town, now assuming a new identity under the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The whole Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is built around the premise of improving connectivity, paving the way for investment, and trade and economic growth. CPEC is the flagship project of BRI and Gwadar is the cornerstone of CPEC. No wonder that the city has witnessed
