Sri Lanka approves revised China Merchants port deal Business  | Reuters and Janice Huang 26 Jul 2017 Sri Lanka has cleared a revised agreement on its Chinese-built southern port of Hambantota with China Merchants Port Holdings (0144). Under the new deal to be signed on Saturday, the Sri Lankan government has sought to limit China's role in running commercial operations at the port while overseeing broader security. The port, close to the world's busiest shipping lanes, has been mired in controversy ever since state-run China Merchants, which built it for US$1.5 billion (HK$11.7 billion), signed an agreement taking an 80 percent stake. China Merchants has agreed to invest up to US$1.12 billion in the port, and it will take an 85 percent stake in Hambantota International Port Group that will run the port and its terminals, with the rest held by Sri Lanka Ports Authority, with a capital of US$794 million. Update: $1.5b China Loan for Iranian Rail Project Wednesday, July 26, 2017 China signed a contract with Iran to finance the electrification of a 926-km railroad from Tehran to the eastern city of Mashhad in Khorasan Razavi Province with a $1.5 billion loan. As per the agreement signed between the two sides in Tehran on Tuesday, the guarantee for the loan, which is to be granted by Exim Bank of China, will be provided by Iran’s Bank of Industry and Mine, IRIB News reported. CPEC: Why India is Opposing the Project?      Col (R) Muhammad Hanif CHINA-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is a $ 52 billion project (China’s investment in Pakistan) being implemented since 2015, when both Pakistan and China signed an agreement to construct this Economic Corridor.
