TVET institutes to meet demand of skilled workforce for CPEC projects

IslamabadAPPSeptember 3, 2019Islamabad : The government is planning to upgrade and enhance capacity of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutes across the country by transferring state of the art Chinese technology to meet China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) skilled workforce required for its second phase.The US $ 68million worth of project is to be implemented with the Chinese support under its socio-economic development programme for Pakistan, according to official documents available with APP.Pakistan earnestly needs such projects to improve skilled labour productivity as the country falls behind other neigbouring countries in this area, the document revealed.The cities in which the TVET institutes are planned to be upgraded include Bahawalpur, Jehlum, Mansehra, Dera Ismail Khan, Gwadar, Lasbela, Larkana, Hyderabad, Giglit, and Mirpur.Under the project, the institutes would be equipped with modern apparatus and smart laboratories, besides advanced level…

Is army extorting money in Balochistan?

Lateef JoharAs enforced disappearances and kill-and-dump operations continue in Balochistan, an increasing number of evidence is surfacing to prove Pakistan army’s involvement in extorting money from the families of victims.On August 20, 2019, a friend sent me a link to a news story on WhatsApp with the headline: “[Pakistan] Army major gets life term for kidnapping Baloch kid for ransom.” However, the news story did not mention the name of the army Major.  After a couple of days, two Balochistan-based rights groups, Baloch Human Rights Organization (BHRO) and Voice for Baloch Missing Persons (VBMP) held a news conference in Quetta not only confirming the name of the perpetrator as Major Naveed but also uncovered the ironic fact that the abductee, Hafeezullah, had never actually been released despite the family paying a ransom of Rs. 5.8million to the latterly convicted army official. The news announcement of this so-called life-sentence by the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) o…

Pakistani counterterrorism forces kill 6 terrorists in Balochistan

Source: Xinhua| 2019-09-04 16:06:17|ISLAMABAD, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- Security officials in Pakistan's southwestern Balochistan province said on Wednesday that personnel of counterterrorism department killed six terrorists in an operation in Quetta, the provincial capital.At least four policemen were injured in the operation, a spokesman for the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) said in a statement.The spokesman said a woman was among the terrorists, who wore suicide vests and were hiding in a compound at the eastern by-pass road locality on the outskirts of the city.The CTD spokesman said one terrorist blew himself up when the operation was launched on receiving intelligence that a group of terrorists were hiding in the compound.Security forces recovered arms and explosives from the compound, according to the statement.The CTD spokesman did not offer more details as to which group was targeted in the early morning operation. He had come to a house in the Zehri tehsil to condole with someone, when his vehicle was attacked on the way back.Laal Bibi, the wife of the slain BNP-M leader, had filed a complaint at Zehri levies station against 12 known and 10 unknown suspects.The suspects nominated in the case included former Balochistan chief minister Sanaullah Zehri, his brother MPA Naimatullah Zehri and Shakeel Durrani.A two-member bench, comprising Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail and Justice Rozi Khan, heard on Tuesday a plea filed by MPA Naimatullah seeking bail in the case.Naimatullah, who had been in hiding, appeared before the court along with h…
