China’s top legislators got together on Saturday to discuss how to better foster the development of artificial intelligence (AI). (And you thought you had a fun weekend!)
The reason for the meeting – Xi told them to do it (Xinhua):
“The legislators said a speech delivered by Xi Jinping…set the direction and made plans for technological innovation and AI development in the new era.”“[Xi raised] specific demands for the people's congresses and their standing committees to promote the healthy development of China's new-generation AI.”Going forward, the task is to design a legal and regulatory framework conducive to developing AI.“NPC special committees, working organs and relevant departments should carry out as soon as possible research on legal issues related to AI, make sound preparations for relevant legislation work, and promote the healthy and orderly development of AI, the legislators said.”
Get smart: China's leaders are serious about fostering AI. Both the legislature and the Politburo have organized study sessions on AI in the past month (see the November 1 and October 30 Tip Sheets).
Get smarter: AI is such a new and quickly-evolving technology that best practices for regulation do not yet exist. China wants to make sure it is ahead of the curve.
