Constantino Xavier, a fellow at foreign policy think-tank Carnegie, said: “This is part of a larger modus operandi by China in the region. The role of the shipyards in China especially will change to become more that of a vendor or part of the supply chain for systems integrators such as Wartsila and along with it joint ventures with them will also be a future trend, Timo Koponen, vp for Flow and Gas Solutions at the technology leader’s Marine Solutions arm told Seatrade Maritime News.He noted that as operating expenditure plays a greater role in the calculations of ship owners and operators compared to capital expenditure, “the role of the shipyard is going to change”, as data and operational optimisation considerations take greater prominence. “I see that their role is changing to becoming more of a supplier than being the centre of everything as it is today,” Koponen said.“As we, and other players trying to grasp the ecosystem thinking we become closer to the owners and operators as it becomes more abou…

India’s strategic unicorn in Chabahar

http://www.livemint.com/Opinion/GxkTd5CNtdJGH1HjfutGXN/Indias-strategic-unicorn-in-Chabahar.html

The security dimension of Chabahar is based on a preferential approach towards Indian interests rather than one based on exclusivity by IranKabir TanejaFile photo of the Chabahar port. It is imperative to remember that Chabahar is an SEZ and not an exclusive project handed over to India. Photo: APIndia’s external affairs minister, Sushma Swaraj, made an unscheduled stop in Tehran on her way back from Russia, weeks after India flagged off the first shipments of wheat to Afghanistan using the much anticipated Chabahar port, on Iran’s south-eastern seaboard. The port, inaugurated by Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani a day after Swaraj’s visit, is marketed as a strategic home run by New Delhi. However, after more than a decade of abstraction, the very concept of “strategy” eludes this flagship undertaking.Delhi and Tehran have maintained amicable and warm ties throughout times of challenges and g…

https://www.thenews.com.pk/print/254179-gwadar-deep-sea-port-to-give-chahbahar-a-run-for-its-money

ListenLAHORE: The hasty opening of the first phase of Iran’s India-financed Chahbahar seaport at a time when China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is about to take off has raised concerns in the economic corridors of the country. On December 3 2017, Iran launched a $1 billion extension of Chabahar port, hoping it will help the country become a key transit route to land-locked Afghanistan and Central Asia, giving a tough competition to Pakistan’s deep-sea Gwadar port. However, it is highly unlikely to happen as Chahbahar port, according to top industry officials, would be struggling for survival after the CPEC becomes fully operational. They argued that, strategically speaking, it won’t be viable for many countries in the region to engage the Iranian port for trade.India has committed $500 million to the Chabahar port on the Gulf of Oman which is Iran’s closest to the Indian Ocean and woul…

Balochistan has already faced severe droughts from 1997 to 2005 which caused 1.76 million livestock deaths, hundreds of people lost their lives due to malnutrition and related diseases and huge financial losses.
In recent days, again the same conditions have appeared. If this time nothing will be done for the protection of the livestock and the people of rural areas then once again Balochistan will face destruction. Balochistan is full of natural resources, I am confused that why government doesn’t take benefit of these resources. I request the Balochistan government to provide funds to the rur…

NEW DELHI: Pakistan has now got ample signs to realise that its so-called "all-weather friend" China is after all not a trustworthy ally but a crude expansionist force.China has projected its One Belt One Road (OBOR) project as a global ideal that will spread economic benefits to less-developed countries. China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) will be a significant part of OBOR, a network through South Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Europe by building land and sea links. But CPEC, it is slowly coming to light, is a Chinese exploitative ploy to grab assets in Pakistan.China's strategy to grab land and assets in smaller, less-developed countries is simple: it gives them loans on high rates for infr…
