Ports, Pipelines, and Geopolitics: China's New Silk Road Is a Challenge for Washington By  Charlie Campbell / Khorgos October 23, 2017 On China’s remote western frontier with Kazakhstan, yurts and camels are silhouetted against a piercing blue sky. Yet the most striking image rising from the desert is an entirely new city. Founded four years ago, Khorgos is poised to become the world’s busiest inland port, a vital link in China’s multi-billion dollar plan to  re-create the Silk Road . Some $8 billion of trade passes through each year, say Chinese officials. There’s a free-trade zone that welcomes 30,000 traders daily, and an industrial complex of factories where manufacturers enjoy perks such as two years of free rent courtesy of the Chinese government. At the customs gate, trucks line up stacked with agricultural equipment and huge cross sections of blue industrial piping, as blurry-eyed drivers chain-smoke out of their cab windows. “Today, the ground of Khorgos is mud,” says

What is actually happening in Balochistan? Comment: What is actually happening in Balochistan?   Last Updated On  16 November,2017  11:10 am 15 Punjabi workers were killed in Turbat. (Orya Maqbool Jan)- Bullet-riddled bodies of 15 ill-fated Punjabi workers, who were travelling to Europe illegally in search of better livelihood, were found from area called Bolida. To comprehend current wave of insurgency in Balochistan, it is necessary to decipher its complex geography. Bolida is a rugged and porous mountainous region followed by vast desert. Few security personnel have been deployed and check posts established on Turbat-Panjgur border region. The above mentioned scenario makes this region ideal for human traffickers and terrorists to carry out appalling acts. In sheer desperation, the remnant terrorists— who are on run and have escaped to Panjgur, Awaran, Bolida and adjoining areas—are now targeting innocent civilians. These areas

Danse Macabre In Balochistan November 17, 2017 With recent killing of a senior police official, SP Muhammad Ilyas, the death toll of  Balochistan  Police in Quetta has risen above 20 in 2017. The systematic targeting of police officials in the conflict-ridden province is a question mark on the performance of law enforcement agencies. The worsening security situation in the area also brings down the towering claims the CM  Balochistan  Sanaullah Zehri, and the provincial interior minister Sarfaraz Bugti, about improved law and order situation in the area. One wonders if the violence will ever come to an end? The irony in the present case is while PM was chairing the meeting to evaluate the law and order situation of  Balochistan  , a police officer was gunned down. The attack is the evidence of believing contrary to officials’ statements related to Balochistan’s peace and security situation. The ever-deteriorating peace of the province needs a compre

PSP calls for viewing Balochistan, Karachi in same security context Listen Expressing concerns over the recent wave of unrest in Balochistan, the Pak Sarzameen Party (PSP) secretary general has said Karachi should also be viewed in the same security context, since a political party funded by the Indian spy agency RAW is working here. On Wednesday a senior superintendent of police, his son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter were gunned down in Quetta. Earlier in the day, police found 15 bullet-ridden bodies of labourers in the mountainous region of Buleda near the border with Iran. Addressing a news conference at the PSP headquarters ‘Pakistan House’ on Thursday, Raza Haroon said the statement of Indian spy Kulbhushan Jadhav was on record about fomenting terrorism in Karachi and Balochistan. Jadhav, a serving Indian naval officer, was arrested by security agencies in March last year while he was trying to enter Pakistan from the Saravan borde

Balochistan’s tragedies Editorial November 17, 2017 Listen Violence, and the tragedy it brings, continues to haunt Balochistan. This march of death has not really stopped at any point, perhaps slowing down now and then but then gaining pace once more. Wednesday was a particularly ugly day with death decimating lives in two separate incidents. In a terrorist attack that mimicked others which have come before, SP Mohammed Ilyas was gunned down by unidentified motorcyclists who approached his vehicle near his home in the Nawan Killi locality in Quetta. Accentuating the tragedy was the death of his wife, son and six-year-old grandson with him. An even younger granddaughter was injured alongside a passer-by. The SP was the second senior police officer to be so brutally killed this month in a city where assailants have repeatedly targeted security personnel. There have been no claims of responsibility in a province where multiple groups with diver

Diplomatic sources here acknowledged that it would be difficult for China to give a concrete shape to the CPEC project without India being on board. The multi-billion dollar CPEC is the flagship project of China’s ambitious Belt, Road Initiative (BRI). Sources said Beijing’s contention was that the CPEC was aimed at enhancing economic cooperation and not achieving any political ambitions. India says it would never give up its objection to the ‘so-called’ CPEC since it runs through Indian territory under the illegal occupation of Pakistan in Jammu and Kashmir. There
