MARTA MONTEIROBy ROBERT D. KAPLANNOVEMBER 3, 2017China’s “One Belt, One Road” initiative, an economic expansion plan that follows the trade routes of the medieval Tang and Yuan dynasties across Eurasia, is overly ambitious because, like all grand strategies, it is aspirational. Yet the future of Eurasia is written into its design. This new Silk Road serves several goals of China’s leaders, who are intent on making their country a full-fledged superpower. In the process, One Belt, One Road seeks to develop — and at the same time surround — the Muslim region of China that abuts Central Asia.Further westward, China intends to create an organic alliance with Iran, a state that because of its i…

It was along this route that Genghis Khan arrived in Europe and Alexander the Great headed east, and almost reached the Chinese province of Xinjiang. The Hellenic world and Eastern Europe have carved science, mathematics and Indo-European languages along these tracks, while the Greco-Buddhist syncretism influenced the development of art and philosophy in China and India. The first major step in opening the Silk Road between the East and the West came with the expansion of Alexander the …

Will information and communication technologies help China realize its Digital Silk Road?By Wenyuan WuNovember 03, 2017In his speech at the opening ceremony of China’s 19th Party Congress, President Xi Jinping depicted China as a model of scientific and harmonious development for developing nations. Xi’s China wants to engage the world through commerce but also through environmental protection and technological advancement. This includes Beijing’s efforts to fight climate change with information and communication technologies (ICTs) that it plans to export along its “One Belt One Road” initiative (OBOR). Xi may have ambitious plans, but could China be throwing up obstacles in its own way?In his speech, the Chinese president emphasized the need to modernize the country’s environmental protections. The Chinese state is taking an “ecological civilization” approach to development and diplomacy, with a natio…

Ever since the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC), held on October 18 -24 in Beijing, enshrined the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in the Party Constitution, it has once again become the hot talking point in the Indian media.A number of mainstream Indian media outlets, flanked by some ultra-nationalist politicians in the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), have claimed that the inclusion of the BRI in the CPC Constitution will mean intense pressure on a reluctant India to join the initiative.
