China’s Belt and Road Initiative and Georgia

http://georgiatoday.ge/news/7974/China%E2%80%99s-Belt-and-Road-Initiative-and-Georgia

Georgia has historically been at the edge of empires. This has been both an asset and a hindrance to the development of the country. An asset because Georgia’s difficult geography and distant location from global centers, denied major powers to invade and keep the country under one’s rule. A hindrance because its geography requires major investments to override its mountains, gorges, rivers etc. This geographic paradigm has been well underway in shaping Georgia’s geopolitical position since the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991. Ever since Georgia has been playing a rebalancing game through turning to other regional powers to counteract the resurgent Russia. Turkey, Azerbaijan, Iran and bigger players such as the EU and the US have their own share of interest in the South Caucasus. However, over the past several years yet another power – China, with its still-evolving Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) –…

Ghani’s no to CPEC: Who will be the loser?

https://pakobserver.net/ghanis-no-cpec-will-loser/

OVER the years Kabul has been pressing hard Pakistan to open up the Wahga land transit for Afghan imports from India. In its latest push, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani during his visit to New Delhi stated that his country would not be part of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor Project (CPEC) unless it is given access to Wahga and Attari border. Addressing a gathering in the Indian capital, he warned that Kabul will restrict Pakistan’s access to Central Asian States if it is not given access to India through the CPEC.
Quite recently we also saw the Afghan President issuing a decree banning entrance of Pakistani trucks into Afghan territory as well as unilaterally putting off a meeting of Afghanistan-Pakistan Transit Trade Coordination Authority. All these steps on the part of Kabul are linked with its demand that Indian side be included in the bilateral and trilateral transit trade agreements. It is important to keep in mind that the tran…

The Balochistan disconnect

https://dailytimes.com.pk/130778/the-balochistan-disconnect/

Balochistan has been the target of “hybrid warfare” for decades. The actors and objective as well as the nature of the enemy has changed with time, only India’s hostility has remained constantIkramSehgalOCTOBER 27, 2017On the evening of Oct 22, 2017 as I was entering Quetta Club with a CPNE delegation for a dinner hosted by the Speaker of the Balochistan Provincial Assembly Ms Rahila Durrani, my son Zarrar sent me a whatsapp snapshot of my three grandchildren in Halloween costumes from New York. By some odd coincidence fully 65 years earlier (1952) my late sister Shahnaz (than all of 3 years old) and I went to a ‘Fancy Dress Party’ in Quetta Club. The many security checks of a ‘Fortress’ on the way to the Club contrasted hugely with Mrs Mahmud Jan, Mrs Irani, Mrs Leslie, my mother and others (all of whose husbands were doing Command and Staff College) riding bicycles going to and fro from Quetta Club to play tennis and squash…

China’s Silk Road Illusions

It was a public relations triumph: Mao destroyed the old order, Deng Xiaoping laid the foundations of a modern economy, Xi is making China great again. This plan, now more often known as the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), to use China’s money and know-how to develop relations with a host of developing countries across Eurasia and to the coasts of Africa has proved a political masterstroke at home and abroad. For foreigners, China appears to be extending a hand of friendship, economic development, and trade across half the world. A huge infrastructure investment comes with the promise of c…

At Gwadar port, China paves a new Silk Road

http://m.gulf-times.com/story/568762/At-Gwadar-port-China-paves-a-new-Silk-Road

Wednesday، 25 October 2017 11:18 PMPakistan’s Gwadar port at first glance seems an unlikely crown jewel in a multi-billion-dollar development project with China aimed at constructing a 21st century Silk Road.Situated on a barren peninsula in the Arabian Sea, Gwadar, or the “gate of the wind”, owes its fortuitous selection as Pakistan’s next economic hub to its strategic location near the Strait of Hormuz.
The city is set to become the bridgehead for the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a $54bn project launched in 2013 linking western China to the Indian Ocean via Pakistan.
The corridor is one of the largest projects in Beijing’s “One Belt One Road” initiative, comprising a network of roads and sea routes involving 65 countries.
The Chinese-financed initiative aims to connect the country with Africa, Asia and Europe through a vast network of ports, railways, roads and industrial parks.
But for Pakist…

Saleem ShahidUpdated October 26, 2017

QUETTA: The Balochistan Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution demanding the federal government ensure that Article 172 (3) of the Constitution was implemented in letter and spirit in order for the province to get its share in the income of oil and gas production. The resolution was moved by the Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party’s MPA and Education Minister, Abdul Rahim Ziaratwal, on Tuesday evening. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Ziaratwal said that as per the 18th Amendment, provinces were to be given their share from the income from oil and gas production, but so far the federal government had not done so in the case of Balochistan. CPEC toll income — myth and reality

https://tribune.com.pk/story/1541404/6-cpec-toll-income-myth-reality/

Acting AJK PM says struggle for innocent Kashmiris living under Indian occupation will continue until liberation. PHOTO: REUTERSEarlier this month, the Board of Investment claimed that the CPEC toll income would be three times the budget of Pakistan after completion by 2030. It is the first time an official figure on CPEC toll estimates has come out and needs some objective appraisal.Pakistan’s budget this year stood at Rs4.75 trillion. Thrice this amount would mean Rs14+ trillion ($135+ billion). Are we expecting an annual revenue stream that is 2-3 times the total CPEC portfolio, merely from the CPEC toll? This is absurd.Let’s do some back-of-the-envelope calculations and assess the toll that the government may charge for Chinese transit trade. Trucks carrying containers fall under articulated truck category. The present National Highway Authority toll rate for these trucks…
