Pakistan rattled by "Hind Baloch Forum"

Pakistan's permanent jihadi network

by LAWRENCE SELLIN, PHD August 3, 2017
The United States, NATO and the Afghan government should not be trying to bring the Taliban to the negotiating table, but Pakistan.
Located about 100 kilometers from the Afghanistan border in Kharan, Balochistan is one of the hundreds of outposts of Pakistan's permanent jihadi network.
Far lesser known than al-Qaeda and the Islamic State, but considered by many to be far more dangerous, Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) is Pakistan's favorite Islamo-nationalist jihadist group.
JuD, which the United Nations say is a front for banned militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), was originally a Punjabi-dominated organization, but, with the help of the Pakistani military expanded into Balochistan and Sindh provinces as a Islamo-nationalist tool to suppress ethnic separatism.
According to South Asia expert Arif Jamal, JuD is a bigger threat than al-Qaeda or the Islamic State because:
"JuD was conceived and created as an organization that can run a modern state. T…

Due to this split, the project has advanced slowly. The eastern route moves along the populous and relatively prosperous area of the country including Punjab Province and connects Islamabad with other major Pakistani cities, while the western route cuts through backward areas like Balochistan Province.A consensus was eventually reached to pursue the si…

CPEC and the opportunity for agriculture

By HasaanKhawarPublished: August 3, 2017

The writer is an honorary Fellow of Consortium for Development Policy Research and tweets @hasaankhawarChina is the world’s largest importer of agricultural products. In 2015, China imported $160 billion worth of agricultural products. However, Pakistan’s share in these exports was minuscule — less than half a percentage point — despite having a large agrarian base and a shared border with China. With a population of 1.3 billion people, China consumes almost $1 trillion worth of food every year. With increased urbanisation and rising incomes, Chinese consumption patterns are also changing, and demand for high quality imported food items is growing at a pace much faster than population growth. Therefore, the domestic consumption is expected to grow by another $500 billion in the next 10 years. According to Bloomberg, it takes about one acre of arable land to feed an average US consu…
