CPEC mention in UNSC resolution good news
ISLAMABAD: The mention of China’s grand “One Belt, One Road” (OBOR) initiative including the China-Pak Economic Corridor (CPEC) in Friday's adopted UN Security Council (UNSC) resolution has come as good news for Pakistan. However, this reference also showed the consensus of the international community on embracing the concept of Chinese leader Xi Jinping. The CPEC that also passes through Azad Kashmir has thus received backing from the highest global forum, which is not obviously disheartening for India that keeps bragging about the success of its foreign policy, threatening Pakistan to isolate it in the world. The CPEC is classified as closely related to the Belt and Road Initiative. It in particular is often regarded as the link between China's maritime and overland Silk Road with the port of Gwadar forming the crux of the CPEC project. The resolution which extended the mandate of the UN Assistance …

Gilgit-Baltistan & CPEC

By:   DailyTimes

20-Mar-17Good news is on the cards for the people of Gilgit-Baltistan. They are all set to become fully paid up members of Pakistan’s fifth province. This comes some seven years after they went to the polls to vote on a government-led autonomy package that saw the election of their first assembly.Back then the federal government had stopped short of according GB provincial status, fearing that such a move would undermine its claim to the entire Kashmir region. So the natural question is what is behind this change of heart? Or, to be more precise, who?The Chinese Economic Corridor (CPEC) holds the key. Crucial parts of the $46 million dollar investment project will pass through GB. Thus the price is now right for Pakistan to come on down and jump on the neo-colonial economic gravy train. On paper, this looks like a smart move. China is both a regional player and a strong supporter of Pakistan. But like any…

File PhotoFew days ago, the Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir while addressing a seminar raised a question, ‘Why can’t Jammu & Kashmir be a part of CPEC‘? CPEC is an acronym for Pakistan China Economic Corridor that involves investment up to around 46 billion dollars in Pakistan, for infrastructure, pipelines, roads, railways, jobs connecting the turbulent province of Xinjiang with the warm deep water port of Gwadar in the restive province of Baluchistan. Let's examine reasons as to why this proposition sounds idealistic and its fulfilment looks completely bleak.Firstly, China Pakistan Economic corridor runs through Gilgit Baltistan, an area that is under Pakistan right now. The Chinese as of now have not indicated to move this corridor through the Indian part of Jammu &a…
