Sub: America First Foreign Policy demands an Independent Balochistan

Dear President Trump,

Several countries across the world believe that your commitment to America First Foreign Policy harms their interests. There is, at least, one notable exception to it, Balochistan.

We understand that America First means giving priority to the interests of the United States in the international sphere. Our country is strategically located, rich in mineral resources, and endowed with five wonderful ports near the Persian Gulf. Balochistan will benefit from competitive bidding by the US multinational companies for mineral resources and ports.

Unfortunately, Balochistan is not independent.

Balochistan has, in fact, become a double colony as it is occupied by Pakistan that itself has been reduced to a colony of China. Pakistan is allowing China to loot our resources. The China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) has emerged as the “corridor of misery” for us as our people are being displaced by this corridor, whose purpose includes the loot of our mineral wealth and providing China a naval foothold next to the strategically important Persian Gulf.

Balochistan is realizing barely one per cent of the value of the resources being extracted from its territory and the use of its ports. Balochistan, which accounts for 49 per cent of Pakistan’s overall area, five of the six major ports, and a large part of Pakistan’s mineral wealth, is unsurprisingly the least developed part of Pakistan. The following table summarizes what Balochistan gives to Pakistan and what it gets in return.

♻What Balochistan Gives to Pakistan

⚫49 per cent of Pakistan’s area

⚫Two-thirds of Pakistan’s coastline

⚫Massive, gold and copper and gas reserves

⚫Four of the five major naval ports of Pakistan

⚫One of the largest ship breaking centres of the world

⚫Nuclear and missile test sites

⚫Monopoly over US access to Afghanistan

⚫Ability to keep an eye on the world’s most important energy trade route

⚫And, the USD 60+ Billion CPEC project would not have been conceived without the Baloch coastline

♻ What Baloch Get from Pakistan (and China)

⚫Demographic marginalisation of the Baloch people in their motherland

⚫Religious radicalisation of the tolerant and liberal Baloch society and attack on their places of worship

⚫The Taliban and the Islamic state

⚫Abduction, rape, torture, and killings in thousands

⚫Targeted killing of leaders

⚫Conversion of Balochistan into a garrison

⚫Highest illiteracy, unemployment, and maternal mortality rates in Pakistan

⚫Rampant loot of natural resources

⚫And, 0.5 per cent share in CPEC funds

America First demands that your administration should support our peaceful independence movement. The United States will benefit from accessing our mineral wealth and port, while we will be able to realise competitive prices for our resources and invest in the well-being our people. Moreover, we will benefit from the presence of American companies that will respect both the rights of indigenous people as well as follow strict environmental norms. Chinese companies protected by the mercenary Pakistani army flout all international norms regarding the protection of the rights of indigenous people as well as environment.

There is another reason why America First demands that your administration should support our peaceful independence movement. For almost two decades, the United States has tried to stabilize Afghanistan at an enormous cost in terms of men and money. Pakistan is simultaneously the biggest beneficiary of American spending related to Afghanistan and also supports Jihadi terrorist outfits that kill your soldiers.

Your defence department will tell you that Pakistan is indispensable. What they will not tell you is that Pakistan is indispensable only until Balochistan is a colony of Pakistan. Presently, Pakistan controls the only major access to Afghanistan through Karachi and blackmails the United States that depends on the Karachi port for transfer of supplies to its forces stationed in Afghanistan. Unlike Pakistan, an independent Balochistan will not deny landlocked Afghanistan access to sea. Moreover, an independent Balochistan will not promote terrorism in Afghanistan as Pakistan has been doing for decades. Unfortunately, right now our soil is being used by Pakistan to house the Taliban who are responsible for so many deaths of American soldiers in Afghanistan. However, an independent Balochistan will deny support to Jihadi terrorists. At another level, an independent Balochistan will help the United States curb Chinese influence in this part of the world.

In short, both in economic and strategic terms, an independent Balochistan is in the interests of the United States. One last point needs to be addressed, namely, American concerns about what kind of country an independent Balochistan will be. It will be a secular democratic country. What guarantees this? We have suffered the worst excesses of the Pakistani army for seven decades and perhaps no one understands the importance of democracy more than us. We practice heterodox Islam permeated by Sufism and have, therefore, been a moderate society all throughout our history. One cannot find any instance of abuse of religious minorities in our society. Our seven decade struggle for independence has never assumed any religious overtones. Pakistan, on the other hand, uses Balochistan as a safe haven for Jihadi terrorists, who in turn help Pakistan terrorise and indoctrinate our youth and brutally attack our shrines.

To conclude, as a doubly colonised nation all that we received so far is death and misery at the hands of Pakistan and China. No matter how long it takes we will continue to fight for our independence. We would like to appeal to you to support our seven decade struggle for independence in the interests of the United States. At least, the United States can insist that Pakistan should not use the weapons provided to combat terrorism to massacre innocent Baloch people. The United States can also press the United Nations to send a fact-finding team to Balochistan to see for itself the sufferings of our people. Finally, the United States could support our peaceful, democratic resistance to Pakistan and China and our struggle for independence.

We wish a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you, your family, and your people.

Yours sincerely,

Prof Naela Quadri Baloch

Will information and communication technologies help China realize its Digital Silk Road?By Wenyuan WuNovember 03, 2017In his speech at the opening ceremony of China’s 19th Party Congress, President Xi Jinping depicted China as a model of scientific and harmonious development for developing nations.
