Gwadhar: An excerpt from History

'Persia and the Persian Question by the Hon. George Nathaniel Curzon, M.P.'Page 431 - 432
Excerpts-European Telegraph, and is sometimes spoken of as the possible maritime terminus of a railway line from Seistan, or British Beluchistan. The town is quaintly and even picturesquely situated
on a long and low spit of sand, projecting into the sea, and narrow
ing to an apex, not more than half a mile in width, between two bays. Upon this low neck of land is built the port of Gwadur, with a population of about 4,000, and a trade in wool and cotton from
the interior, and in fish from the coast. On the southern side,
and immediately below the town, which is not at first visible from
the sea, the narrow spit suddenly bulges into a rocky promontory,
from 100 to 300 feet in height, the latitudinal section of which is
perhaps six miles in length, and which, presenting its broad face to
the sea, is exactly like the head of a hammer into which the haft

Turning corners in Afghanistan

by LAWRENCE SELLIN, PHD November 29, 2017
In the latest issue of Foreign Policy journal, Paul McLeary quotes Gen. John Nicholson, head of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, who claims, that after 16 years of war, the United States and its Afghan partners "have turned the corner," the "momentum is now with Afghan security forces," and we are now "on a path to a win."
McLeary notes that we also "turned corners" in 2007, 2011 and 2012 and Nicholson is the eighth commander in the last ten years to forecast a pathway to victory.
In contrast to Nicholson's upbeat assessment, the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) reported in October 2017 that the Afghan government controls 56 percent of the country, down from 62 percent in 2016, the end result of over $60 billion of American taxpayer money spent to train and equip the Afghan security forces.
Using the same counterinsurgency and nation-building strategy, Nicholson promis…

Silk Road presents more opportunities than infrastructure

http://www.dailymirror.lk/

2017-11-30 00:00:32China’s Belt and Road (B&R) initiative is an ambitious undertaking that has the potential to reshape the global economy and transform world trade. Many governments, multinational development organisations and international corporations welcome the opportunity to support the series of cross-border infrastructure projects. With over 60 countries and 4.4 billion people included in the route passing from Asia to Africa, covering a third of world gross domestic product, the economic and financial benefits of B&R are likely to go beyond the countries getting new bridges, railway lines and roads.Countries such as Singapore, which are well positioned along the Silk Road, will form crucial links between China and other countries along the route, helping drive B&R. But many corporations are either unsure of how they can be meaningfully involved or are doubtful that the initiative is relevant for organisations not in the business of building…

Historically, the Dragon is driven by self-interests, even against fair-play norms, as is evident in its dealing with neighbours India, Vietnam etc. But, its ensnaring abilities will come to forefront for Pakistan as more details of CPEC tumble out.

Pakistan Business Council seeks ‘greater transparency’ in CPEC

https://www.thenews.com.pk/print/250504-pakistan-business-council-seeks-greater-transparency-in-cpecKARACHI: Pakistan’s leading business advocacy forum on Wednesday emphasised a need of ‘greater transparency’ in CPEC (China-Pakistan Economic Corridor) projects to identify its impact on local industries, saying the country is ‘prematurely’ de-industrialising.
CPEC will no doubt be a game changer for Pakistan and there is hardly a facet of the economy that will not be touched by it,” the Pakistan Business Council (PBC) said. “However, there needs to be greater transparency on how CPEC will impact the competitiveness of existing domestic industries and the safeguards that will be deployed to prevent it becoming a channel for cheap imports.” PBC, in a 16-page ‘agenda for economy’ report, said industries to be established in special economic zones under CPEC are expected to enjoy extensive concessions. “Pakistan should leverage CPEC to attract a meaningful percentage of the millions of job…

CPEC: Security tightened

https://pakobserver.net/cpec-security-tightened/

China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is surely and certainly a great game changer not only for Pakistan but also for the entire region. Under CPEC, a number of projects in energy, infrastructure and other sectors are under implementation across Pakistan including Punjab province. Pretty large numbers of Chinese nationals along with local people are working on these projects day and night. They are our guests and ensuring their security and safe working atmosphere is the bounden duty of the people as well as all law enforcement agencies in all fairness.
It is good to note that Punjab Police in the prevailing circumstances has decided to revise the security plan for the Chinese nationals on a priority basis. According to media reports, the Police Chief has quite timely and rightly directed all field police officers to reassess security personnel deployment for the Chinese nationals working on various development projects. All regional a…

Reinventing The Wheel In Afghanistan (To Keep The Cash Flowing)

One day while working for a multinational corporation in Europe, I began receiving emails about what I will call Project Blue. I had never heard of Project Blue. I then contacted one of my colleagues to enlighten me about Project Blue. Known for her straightforward manner, she said it was much the same as Project Red, but Project Red wasn’t working, so they changed the name.Yes, that really happened. The Pentagon military leadership, many of whom fancy themselves corporate executives, seemed to have adopted that method of bureaucratic legerdemain.Around 2010, the U.S established the Afghan Local Police (ALP) to serve as locally-based village self-defense forces. The ALP units were recruited from local communities in areas where Afghan government control was minimal. The recruits were selected and vetted by community le…

The Struggle in Balochistan

— Adaner UsmaniOVER THE ELEVEN years that have elapsed since 9/11, Pakistan has found itself in the headlights of the mainstream press for a few, consistent reasons. International audiences have been instructed to worry earnestly about the country’s fate, what with the Army’s “double-game” in Afghanistan, drone attacks in the tribal areas, the Taliban-led insurgencies in the northwest, and suicide bombings in its urban centers. While it’s true that the American adventure in Af-Pak has had real effects on Pakistan, these mainstream narratives have never adequately captured the actual political dynamics of the country. There’s perhaps no better illustration of this than the fact that the country’s most significant armed conflict is not the one in the northwest, but rather the decades-old struggle waged by secular nationalists in the province of Balochistan. The national question has been …
