Controversial Hingol Dam project gets go-ahead after re-design

The Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) has decided to go ahead with the almost-abandoned Hingol Dam project in district Lasbella, Balochistan. The US$2.1 billion water reservoir project will now be undertaken on a new site, following an agreement between the Balochistan government and the Hindu community, officials told The News on Monday.

Fears of submerging the historic Hinglaj Mata Mandir near the Hingol River in district Lasbella had initially compelled the Balochistan Assembly to adopt a unanimous resolution, asking the federal government to abandon the project. This move had temporarily halted surveys and design studies on the proposed water reservoir.

Wapda, however, continued to move for the construction of a water reservoir on the Hingol river, which lies approximately 250 kilometres northwest of Karachi. Engineers finally managed to find another suitable location for the construction of the dam. “Surveys and design …

Immediate release of missing persons urged

In yet another peaceful bid to draw attention of public and law enforcement agencies towards the miseries of the relatives of missing persons, the Defence of Human Rights (DHR), mostly women, organised a rally and symbolic sit-in before the Prime Minister Secretariat on the occasion of International Women’s Day.

This time joined by selected civil society activists and university students; the protesters also handed over a memorandum demanding immediate release of missing persons to the officials of Human Rights Ministry. In addition to conveying the disparity and grief of the relatives of missing persons, the memorandum appealed to Minister for Human Rights Mumtaz Alam Gilani to cancel the policies and agreements of President Musharraf.
