The Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) has decided to go ahead with the almost-abandoned Hingol Dam project in district Lasbella, Balochistan. The US$2.1 billion water reservoir project will now be undertaken on a new site, following an agreement between the Balochistan government and the Hindu community, officials told The News on Monday.
Fears of submerging the historic Hinglaj Mata Mandir near the Hingol River in district Lasbella had initially compelled the Balochistan Assembly to adopt a unanimous resolution, asking the federal government to abandon the project. This move had temporarily halted surveys and design studies on the proposed water reservoir.
Wapda, however, continued to move for the construction of a water reservoir on the Hingol river, which lies approximately 250 kilometres northwest of Karachi. Engineers finally managed to find another suitable location for the construction of the dam. “Surveys and design …
